Number One Tip for Writing Websites People Read

You can find hundreds if not thousands of articles and blog posts that offer a number of tips and techniques for writing websites, but you can forget it all and just remember this one tip:

Write the content with the reader in mind.

So lame sounding.  Right?  There’s no V8 moment here.  Except so few website writers understand the importance of putting yourself in the shoes of the reader and write using the words and phrases that will resonate with their needs.

We think:  conversion ratio

We think: search engine optimization

We think: getting on the first page of Google search results

That’s all well and good – but once the reader clicks on your website – what will keep them reading long enough to click on a button, buy a product or send you an email?

Content written with the reader in mind.

I would suggest that you look at your website content through the CRITICAL eyes of your target prospect.  Do your headlines grab their attention?

Do you talk about results?

Do you ask questions that strike a chord with the reader?

Perhaps you need a freelance web writer experienced in understanding the value of writing with the reader in mind.

Set Goals for Writing Website Content

You already have your website but you realise you need to make some updates.  Where should you start?

Goal One:  Address Different Audience Groups

First determine if you have the right pages based on the customer’s need.  Think like a customer.  When they arrive on your site, what will be most important to them?  Most likely you have more than one customer group – you’ll need to address each separately because they have different needs and different motivating factors.

Create landing pages that address each audience type separately.  You may have one primary landing page and then offer the opportunity for the different audiences to click on the page that addresses their needs.

Example:  A medical insurance company has patients looking to be insured or to check on a claim.  You also have medical providers – hospitals, doctors, nurses that will want to come to your site for information.

On your landing page, briefly acknowledge both groups and then have a page, link or video that leads them to a landing page that meets their specific needs.

Goal Two: Each Page Has it’s Own Purpose

Another goal for your page will be to make sure each page is broken down into focused topics.  Rather than having a site with one page that tells your entire story, break the sales process and company information into multiple pages that have additional sub-heading pages beneath.

Example:  Your primary pages may be Home, About, Contact, Products, Services, Testimonials

Your products page can have a sub landing page following by additional pages that provide more information about each products.  The same for your Services page.

Goal Three: Be available on every page

Prominently display your contact information on every page so that the customer doesn’t have to hunt you down.

Goal Four: Eat the Elephant One bite and a time

Writing websites or updating the website content can be an overwhelming task.  Just take it one step, one page, one paragraph at a time.  The best landing pages are updated on a regular basis – it is a continual process.

When in doubt – hire a freelance web writer to help you out!

Create the Best Landing Page : SEO is only one step

SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is a technical process that uses a combination of key words and analytics to manipulate your website to a high (preferably first) position in the Search results. You focus on finding the right key words and key word phrases for the purpose of increasing the traffic to your website. You consider:

  • What do readers type into the search bar?
  • How many other sties use those words?
  • Do you use the plural or singular version of the key word?
  • Which key word analysis site offers the best information?
  • How often do you use the key words in your content?

All of this SEO effort is designed to have your website appear on the first page of the search results.

But what happens after you’ve been selected by the reader?

Web copywriters will tell you that having reader-focused, easy to understand content should be your number one focus for an effective landing page.

Writing websites people read requires a unique blend of:

  • Capturing the reader’s attention by speaking to their “pain”
  • Communicating your unique value and why they should contact you rather than the competition
  • Effectively weaving the key words and phrases into your content for the search engine spiders
